Online Shopping Security

November 1, 2008 · 1 Comment

It’s already November and we have just 6 1/2 weeks to go before Christmas. Over the next 6 weeks we are going to look at way to reduce your risk of shopping online and how to take steps to protect your identy.  So that this season is safe and enjoyable.

One of the things that seems to amaze me is that people tend to use the same password for signing into their shopping account and into their banking account. Your banking accounts need to be protected from hackers and should contain numbers, letters, and characters to strengthen your password. The more characters and symbols that you use the more you increase your security. For example a 10 character password with a blend of characters has a stronger security than a password made up of 6 characters.

Passwords should not be made up of names and dates that can be known by other people. This will make it easier for someone you know to hack into your accounts. Going through a break up?  Guess who will figure out your password.

So I challenge you over the next week to look at all of your online shopping and change your passwords so that your passwords do not match from your shopping account to your banking account and strengthen your password so that you have a mix a characters.

Check in next week when we review more online shopping tips and how to make this season a safe and fun time for your whole family.
